What does toothpaste contain for flavoring and why?
Loading...99% of the toothpaste you can find today is flavored in one way or another, why? Flavor is something that doesn't really have a purely dental effect - but which can indirectly have an impact on oral health. Let us explain.
The two functions of taste
1. A good taste
First and foremost, it should be so good that it attracts use, and I don't mean from a commercial point of view, but because it should feel positive to brush your teeth and thus keep your teeth and gums whole and healthy.
2. Fresh air
The second task is to create a fresh and clean feeling and breath if possible. There are many things that can affect breath and we will return to that in another part of the blog series, but under healthy conditions, toothpaste can be crucial.
The most popular flavor
The absolute most popular flavor, at least among adults, is mint and this is probably because mint has always been associated with freshness in many different areas. We have chosen to use mint that is 100% based on natural essential oils. In a survey at the dental fair in autumn -24, 92% of toothbrushers surveyed thought we had hit the mark and that the aftertaste was just the right amount of freshness. A result that we are very proud of.
Children and some people with dry mouth problems may find the mint a bit strong.
But hang in there, we will provide a solution 😉
Other ingredients in Tjikko
In recent weeks, we have reviewed all the active dental care ingredients in our toothpaste tablets. However, we also have some additional ingredients that are not dental care in themselves, but have another positive function for the product.
- You will find yeast and gum arabic as part of the natural mint oil.
- You will also find silica, which is found in menthol.
- Microcrystalline cellulose (wood fiber) is used as a binder and is completely harmless as it passes through the gastrointestinal tract without being absorbed.
- A small amount of magnesium stearate is used as a lubricant and binder.
The difference compared to regular toothpaste
All in all, it's still a significant difference from regular toothpaste, which requires water, thickeners, filler particles, dyes and preservatives. Why? So you can squeeze it out of a tube that's not really needed. Remember, Tjikko's ingredients are 100% natural!
